Arctic Regional Hydrographic Commission and Arctic SDI – Joint Statement of Intent

Several years of cooperation between the Arctic Regional Hydrographic Commission and the Arctic SDI is now formalized through a Joint Statement of Intent.

The purpose of the collaboration is to “facilitate bringing land and marine data together in an infrastructure that
connects users across domains to the spatial data valued to support research, planning, and decision making in the Arctic”.

Alignment of Polar Data Policies

Together with colleagues from Arctic Data Committee, Southern Ocean Observing System and Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management representatives from the Arctic SDI has participated in the development of the the document “Alignment of Polar Data Policies“.

The document examines the state and recent developments of global and important regional data policies, as well as technological and institutional developments that should or might be considered when forming new polar data policies.

The document identifies a number of data management principles that can be regarded as essential to the management of polar research
data and can be incorporated in all polar data policies in such a way that they are aligned with each other and with overarching global and regional data policies.

Video presentation at the Arctic Council SAO plenary meeting November 2020

Eydís Líndal Finnbogadóttir, chair of Arctic SDI participated in the Arctic Council SAO plenary meeting 17. – 19. November 2020. The main focus of her talk and video presentation was the importance of making Arctic Council Working Groups data available online in a standardized manner. That would increase the visibility of the Arctic Council work, while contributing to building, reliable publicly accessible database on geodata of the Arctic region.

The Arctic SDI

  • is willing to continue working with the Arctic Council and its Working Groups, to find a way to ensure that marine and land data from the Arctic is accessible to everyone.
  • would happily support the Arctic Council in developing policy on how to make the data, that is generated by the Working Groups, accessible to everyone.
  • urges the Arctic Council to formulate a joint policy on open access to Arctic Council geospatial data that will encourage reuse of data, innovation and the discovery of new challenges.

A Memorandum to Senior Arctic Officials November 2020 was sent in before the meeting describing the state of the Arctic SDI work.

Catalogue on Data and Services Presentation at the Polar Data Forum III – Helsinki, Finland 21 November 2019

See Presentation: A method for producing a catalogue for Arctic SDI

Aggregating information about services and data is essential:
• Reduce duplicated effort, in both data collection and
distribution
• Understand what information is available and what needs
further collecting / research – “a map of data”
• Discovery of relevant data provided outside of the SDI
Without a catalogue, an SDI cannot reach its full potential
